Telecom operators are increasingly exposing network capabilities through standardized APIs. In February 2026, AT&T described its partnership with Aduna as a step toward standardized 5G network APIs in the United States, including APIs such as Number Verification and SIM Swap that can help developers build safer authentication and fraud-prevention flows.

This is important because SMS OTP has always depended on a simple assumption: if a user receives a code on a number, they likely control that number. Network APIs can add stronger signals around that assumption.

What network APIs can add

Number Verification can confirm possession of a mobile number through the carrier network with little or no user input. SIM Swap checks can help identify whether a number was recently moved to a new SIM, which may indicate account takeover risk. KYC-related APIs can also compare user-provided details against verified operator records in supported markets.

These signals do not automatically replace every OTP flow. But they can reduce friction for legitimate users and raise the security bar for high-risk actions such as account recovery, new-device login, payments, or profile changes.
